Scallops, Bobbins and Frills - oh my!
-I was thrilled to see in February’s edition of Country Living magazine that scallops and waves in interior design are here to stay. I’m a big believer in buying what you love for your home rather than following trends, but there is some satisfaction in realising what you love is on trend and is everywhere! For one it means more options and oh my, there are SO many very gorgeous options.
I guess as someone whose wedding dress was a layer upon layer of scalloped frills it’s inevitable that I would be drawn to scallops. There’s something whimsical and joyful in a scalloped edge. I always adore small details when it comes to interiors, e.g. a piped edge on a sofa in a contrasting colour or a pom pom trim to a curtain. Elements that at first, someone entering your room may not notice but overall they always work to create something super special and personal to you. Our homes should bring us joy and spotting details like this always bring me absolute heart-jumping joy.
Originating during the Art Deco period, scallops are a great way of bringing a touch of femininity or informality to a room. And as with all trends, it’s entirely up to you whether you love it and if so, how much you want to use, or where you want it to be. If you're a scallop lover like me, then here is a list of some gorgeous scalloped homewares for interiors which I've spotted that you may want to think about in your home.
My current wishlist item, for when I win the lottery is this stunning scalloped mirror from Balineum. Imagine it hanging over a mantelpiece in your sitting room? You wouldn’t need any other scallop detail in your room but it would just look heavenly.
Or for a statement scalloped piece of furniture you could look at the handmade console tables and side tables by Argento & Birch with their scalloped edges in bold colours.
If you'd prefer to add scallops in a more subtle way, then how about these scalloped cotton curtains from Anthropologie?
Or there are lots of rugs available with scalloped edges, some are neutral and some have colour to emphasise the shape. This jute rug from La Redoubte would look lovely in a hallway, kitchen or bedroom.
I really love these super clever scalloped trims from Camilla Hampton Interiors which you can use to add interest to a quite literally anything - a shelf, a console tabletop, banquette seating, door architrave. They look so effective and I’m hoping to add some of these to my daughter’s bedroom when we properly decorate and put in some book shelves.
Of course if you’re just looking for that little scalloped something to add a touch of timeless interior charm to your home, why not have a look at our Scallop Collection at Rhubarb & Hare. All handmade items from UK potters and ceramicists.
